Ferragamo Company History

Monday, February 21, 2011

Ferragamo Company, the most successful business was founded by Salvatore Ferragamo who was born on 5th June 1889 in the city of Bonito in Italy. Before starting this business venture, for a number of years he had been designing shoes for celebrities during 1920s.

His innovations were revolutionary, especially the cage heel and the wedge heel shoes that he invented for women.

Designing and making shoes were Ferragamo's calling and passion in life. This was known to him quite early when he the eleventh child in the family of fourteen children, designed and crafted his first pair of shoes at the tender age of nine and gifted to his sister.

He pursued his study related shoe design with focus and dedication. First he took up a year's course in City of Naples and then opened his first store at his native town in his parent's house. In 1914, he left for Boston and joined a shoe factory to work there.

After a while a few of his brothers too managed to join him in California where Ferragamo took up residence first in Santa Barbara and later in Hollywood. This is where he opened his first shop where he not only repaired shoes but took shoes orders for making.

Such was the craftsmanship and genius of Ferragamo that lots of celebrities soon began to line up and buy his designer creations. Very soon he became popular as the Shoemaker of the Stars. But resting on his laurels was not Ferragamo's habit. He was searching for perfection. It bothered him that though the shoes were artistic and beautiful looking pieces, they could not fit the feet a hundred percent. To find solution, he decided to study human anatomy and joined University of Southern California.

Ferragamo returned to Italy in 1927 and went on to start his new company Ferragamo Company and went on to design shoes for famous people like Eva Peron, Members of Royalty, Maharani of Cooch Behar, Marlyn Monroe etc.

Today Ferragamo is no more. He passed away on 7th August 1960. But his legacy continues to live. The company he founded, has diversified into making and marketing a lot many products including fashion clothes, accessories, watches, bags, eye glasses, perfumes and other cosmetics too.
